A new web experience for C-MAP

Challenge

C-MAP is a digital cartography brand that belongs to Navico.
C-MAP’s digital experience was outdated (look, feel and functionality). Following an incomplete delivery of the UX agency, most of it had to be redone. The missing wireframes and incomplete user journeys combined with a complex product offer made the job quite challenging.

Making the product available for all user scenarios was one of the challenges in creating the right information architecture for the C-MAP website.
Another big effort was put into trying to embed as much of the previous work as possible, in order to save resources.

Context

C-MAP makes maps for maritime use. However, there is a considerable legacy. In a nutshell, digital maps are big chunks of data, mathematically processed to be legible by machines that, in return, display a pretty image. Of course, old data doesn’t just get discarded but re-used, re- processed.

Depending on the processing, maps are compatible with certain devices; Some maps can be updated, while others are at the end of their life cycle; Some contain various levels of details. The new C-MAP web experience had to account for all these scenarios, as well as the standard ‘I want to buy a new map’ case.

Process

1. I made sure I understood the UX delivery.
2. I marked the missing pages. 3. With the help of subject matter experts, I understood the product — all types of maps with their respective features.
4. I plotted user journeys and identified the missing wireframes.
5. I built new wireframes and adapted the existing ones.
6. I organised workshops to gather feedback from stakeholders.
7. Once the structure was in place, I populated the wireframes with preliminary copy.

Result

The product info pages ensured a much smoother user journey. The website visitors were served with just about the right information to educate their choices and convince them to buy.
